چکیده

The topographic wetness index (TWI), frequently used in approximately characterizing the spatial distribution of soil moisture and surface saturation within a watershed, has been widely applied in topography-related geographical processes and hydrological models. However, it is still questionable whether the current algorithms of TWI can adequately model the spatial distribution of topographic characteristics. Based upon the widely-used multiple flow direction approach (MFD), a novel MFD algorithm (NMFD) is proposed for improving the TWI derivation using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in this study. Compared with MFD, NMFD improves the mathematical equations of the contributing area and more precisely calculates the effective contour length. Additionally, a varying exponent strategy is adopted to dynamically determine the downslope flow-partition exponent. Finally, a flowdirection tracking method is employed to address grid cells in flat terrain. The NMFD algorithm is first applied to a catchment located upstream of the Hanjiang River in China to demonstrate its accuracy and improvements. Then NMFD is quantitatively evaluated by using four types of artificial mathematical surfaces. The results indicate that the error generated by NMFD is generally lower than that computed by MFD, and NMFD is able to more accurately represent the hydrological similarity of

Topographic Wetness Index Computed Using Multiple Flow Direction Algorithm and Local Maximum Downslope Gradient

Topographic wetness index (TWI) can quantify the control of local topography on hydrological processes and indicate the spatial distribution of soil moisture and surface saturation. The formulation is TWI=ln(a/tanβ), where a is the upslope contributing area per unit contour length and β is the local gradient. Many of the existing flow-direction algorithms for computing a use global partition ex...

A new triangular multiple flow direction algorithm for computing upslope areas from gridded digital elevation models

Gridded digital elevation data, often referred to as DEMs, are one of the most widely available forms of environmental data. Topographic analysis of DEMs can take many forms, but in hydrologic and geomorphologic applications it is typically used as a surrogate for the spatial variation of hydrological conditions (topographic indices) and flow routing. Here we report on a new flow routing algori...

Application of Data-Mining Algorithms in the Sensitivity Analysis and Zoning of Areas Prone to Gully Erosion in the Indicator Watersheds of Khorasan Razavi Province

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Gully erosion is one of the most important sources of sediment in the watersheds and a common phenomenon in semi-arid climate that affects vast areas with different morphological, soil and climatic conditions. This type of erosion is very dangerous due to the transfer of fertile soil horizons, and the reduction of water holding capacity also is a factor for s...

Spatial relationships between leaf area index and topographic factors in a semiarid grassland: Joint multifractal analysis

A considerable portion of Canada’s landmass is covered by grassland ecosystems. Insight into the grassland spatial heterogeneity will not only contribute to better understanding of the scale dependent ecological processes but will also help in management and monitoring. Leaf area index (LAI) is a key structural attribute of grassland that reflects primary production. It is well-known that topog...

Investigation some of the Biotic and Abiotic Variables Effective on the Diameter Increment of the Beech Trees at Fixed Sample Plots level by Growth Models

Quantifying forest growth and determination of its affective factors are fundamental for forest management. This study examines the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the diameter increment of oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) in a high-elevation forest in northern Iran using permanent sample plots. The aim of this study was identification and quantifying environmental factors such...
